Sunrise at 52 Feet

Sunrise at 52 Feet, originally uploaded by ChrisIrmo.

Nikon D50, 18mm, f/14, ISO 200.
Wide angle focus and narrow apertures are typical in this type of landscape pictures. The narrow aperture contributes to the wide depth of field to render the background sharp.

The Exposed Temple Hall and the Third Stage of Enlightenment

Nikon D2Xs, f/4.5, 1/2000 seconds, ISO100, 13mm.
The very wide angle creates the perspective the composition uses lines to drive the eyes towards the background, the fuzzy effect is due to the wide aperture and wide angle focal distance.

Nevada en O Cebreiro, marzo 2008, originally uploaded by lugarzen.

Canon EOS300D, 75mm, f/5, 1/3200 seconds,ISO400.
This is a nice composition with peculiar settings. The tree and the house wall frame the scene a typical composition theme. The f/5 aperture makes the borders and background slightly fuzzy and the high ISO gives some grain to the picture.Note the very fast shutter speed, It could have been taken with ISO100 even without a tripod.

Ocean Moon

Ocean Moon, originally uploaded by lakewentworth.

Nikon D80, 18mm, f/4, 30 seconds, ISO250.
Taken from an 8th floor this moonlit scene shows how the moon can render colors quite well with a long exposition. The long exposition also makes both the clouds and the ocean smooth as the movement smothes the surfaces.

Golden Perspective

Golden Perspective, originally uploaded by Vermin Inc.

Pentax K10D, f/32, 12mm, ISO100, 1/30 seconds.
The very wide angle at 12mm gives the image the singular perspective and the very narrow aperture at f/32 makes both the bottom at top of the buildings be in focus. The image has strong postprocessing but the perspective and focus make it interesting.

La Quebrada Cliff Diver / Clavadista

Canon Rebel XTI, 37mm, f/11, 1/6 seconds, ISO400.
A nice composition where both the statue and the sky are well exposed, the picture was taken at 8pm after sunset producing the nice tones in the sky and the statue. The narrow aperture makes both the foreground and background sharp.

Bridge

, originally uploaded by pasma.

Nikon D200, 1/200 seconds, f/5, 36mm, ISO100.
Typical composition with the tree and the post framing the bridge and diagonal lines entering the picture from the bottom right corner. The settings are almost default and that works well because the light is balanced and the only subject is the bridge.

Shadows

Shadows, originally uploaded by 96dpi.

Canon EOS 40D, ISO200, 30 seconds, 10mm, f/10.
The super wide angle creates the perspective and makes the lights appear like stars after the long exposure. The narrow aperture makes everything appear sharp. A nice example of a night picture that looks well in black and white.

Engineering & Vision

Engineering & Vision, originally uploaded by wildphotons.

Canon EOS1D-MarkII, 0.3 seconds, f/16, 310mm, ISO100.
Taken with a tripod using a very narrow aperture to achieve a big depth of field, all the flowers are sharp regardless of their position.

a beautiful profession

a beautiful profession, originally uploaded by jchen88.

Canon Rebel XTI, 1/1000 seconds, f/11, ISO400, 75mm.
The very fast shutter speed helps to capture the bee in motion here, the long focal distance blurs the background keeping the flower and the bee sharp even with the movement.

On the beach

On the beach, originally uploaded by lasse christensen.

Nikon D40X, 1/1600 seconds, f/7.1, ISO200, 42mm.
The very short exposure time is because the photo was taken with ISO200 at daylight, the aperture is general purpose and works well to render the most important subjects sharp. The mountains and the features in the sky are a very nice background to the picture.

Asking for help

Asking for help, originally uploaded by bobtravis.

Canon Rebel XTI, 115mm, f/6.3, 1/10 seconds, ISO100.
The long focal length and relatively wide aperture contribute to blurr the background. The photo looks staged because at 1/10 either the whole picture will look moved or the picture was taken with a tripod. So this is probably staged one way or the other.

Salt Mines House

Salt Mines House, originally uploaded by Fr Antunes.

Canon EOS400D, 18mm, 1/160 seconds, f/7.1, ISO 100.
The wide angle creates a singular perspective here and since the house is the only focal point the 7.1 aperture is enough to render it sharp.

The Hidden Buddhist Temple of Borobudur at Sunrise

Nikon D2Xs, 14mm, f/4.8, 0.8 seconds, ISO 100.
The very wide focal length captures the complete scene, the time was the key for the colors and contrast and an intermediate exposure time was needed.

jeux d'enfants

jeux d'enfants, originally uploaded by Mélanie plante.

Nikon D40, f/8, 52mm, ISO200, 1/160 secs.
Everything is sharply focused in this picture due to the small aperture (f8). There are several classic composition themes here the pic has a clear foreground (children) and background (train). The curved rails enter the picture from a corner and drive the eyes thru the composition.

Green

Green, originally uploaded by Fr Antunes.

Canon EOS400D, 18mm, 1/125secs, ISO100, f/6.3
The wide aperture was needed here to allow the shot without a tripod due to the lightning conditions. A smaller aperture might have rendered the distant rocks sharper.

Whisper

Whisper, originally uploaded by aftab..

Panasonic DMC-FZ50, 1/60 seconds, 7.4 mm, f6.3, ISO 100.
This is a typical example of a landscape picture with some foreground to give the idea of perspective, because of the wide aperture the foreground is focused but the distant background is slightly unsharp.

Sunset at El Teide

Sunset at El Teide, originally uploaded by szeke.

Canon EOS30D, ISO100, f/7.1, 28mm, 1/400 seconds.
Very nice silouette of a mountain with a very nice exposed sky. The picture is backlit creating the silouettes. The aperture is normal and the exposition is centered. Note the composition with the mountain on the side and not centered in the picture.

Beach Scene

DSCF7109.JPG, originally uploaded by Andy Maluche.

Fujifilm Finepix S3Pro, 18mm, f/11, 1/20 seconds, ISO 400.
This is a creative combination of small aperture and an intermediate shutter speed to give the photo a sense of movement, combined with the inclined perspective the result is really dynamic.

zubizuri

zubizuri, originally uploaded by kurtxio.

Canon EOS 30D, 18mm, ISO 1600, f/6.3,1/10 seconds.
Very nice picture of the bridge with the city as background and the water as the foreground, this was probably taken without a tripod that is why a very high ISO speed had to be used and very good pulse to make the picture sharp at 0.1 seconds exposure.

shelter

shelter, originally uploaded by mugley.

Nikon D300, 12mm, ISO 200, f/9, 1.6 seconds.
The very wide focal length (12mm) makes everything in focus with f9 and contributes to the perspective. Due to the relatively narrow aperture f9 a long shutter speed and higher ISO was used for this pic.

Green with Envy Sky..

Green with Envy Sky.., originally uploaded by Wickedly Smart.

Nikon D80, 55mm, ISO100, f/5.6, 1/30 seconds.
Interesting backlit scene that creates the shadows on the light pole with the light being lit itself. The sky on the background is very interesting too. The pic looks slightly unsharp probably because of not using a tripod with the 1/30 exposure.

First flowers on a tree

First flowers on a tree, originally uploaded by Gertrud K..

Sony DSCW200, 7.6mm, ISO 125, f/5.6, 1/160 seconds.
This is a nice example of the Bokeh effect blurring the background. The mix on sky and tree in the background is also interesting.

Untitled Dark Scene

, originally uploaded by Sepulture {regret}.

Canon Powershot A610, 8.5mm, f6.3, 1/4 second.
A very intriguing picture taken in a dark room, soft flash was used and an intermediate shutter speed of 1/4 of a second, the 6.3 aperture is good enough to render the subject and the light bulb in focus.

Wimmin's Institute

wimmin's institute, originally uploaded by mugley.

Nikon D300, 12mm, ISO200, f9, 8 seconds.
The very wide focal length combined with the perspective give the picture and amazing geometry. The long exposure captured all the light colors at the same time with a very interesting result.

Fountain

_MG_3705, originally uploaded by 91RS.

Canon 400D, f4, 28mm, 0.3 seconds exposure, ISO 400.
The intermediate exposure produces the smoothness of the water but is probably not enough for the ambient light so the high ISO setting helps. The picture is still underexposed in the foreground and background. The composition might have been better bringing the fountain closed to the camera.

Shoes in Hand

He Is Coming, Shoes in Hand!, originally uploaded by Hamed Saber.

Sony DSC-H1, 24.8mm, f4, 1/320 seconds.
The backlit sky creates the silouettes, I'm not very sure about the aperture because there is nothing to focus except the silouette, placing the silouette 1/3 to the border is a good composition rule and looks much better than centered. Also note the horizon is about 1/3 into the top.

Brunnital

Brunnital, originally uploaded by GilmoPix.

FujiFilm Finepix 4700, f7, ISO200, 15.3mm.
Since everything is about the same distance from the camera de f7 aperture works well to render the trees, cabin and right-side mountain on focus. The trees and mountains "frame" the picture which is always a good composition idea. Maybe the background mountains could have been better focused with a wider aperture.

Orion Watch Over Me

Orion Watch Over Me, originally uploaded by Fort Photo.

Nikon D300, ISO 800, f4, 17mm, 30 seconds exposure.
Beautiful pic of the Orion Constellation and Sirius, the clouds in the horizon are a nice reference and background.

Icy river

Icy river, originally uploaded by slack12.

NikonD200, 18mm at f14. The f14 aperture allows a big depth of field and that is why the ice in the foreground is in focus as well as the sky in the background. This is a typical composition with a foreground, middle and background.

Milky Way Rising

Milky Way Rising, originally uploaded by jpstanley.

Canon XTI, f3.5, 18mm, ISO1600, 165 seconds exposure.
This is a beautiful pic of the Milky way, the horizon with some trees and hills gives a perfect framing to the stars. Clean air a steady tripod and a long exposure are needed as well as getting up very very early. The IS01600 settings gives some texture to the sky.

Night Clouds

Night Clouds, originally uploaded by lrargerich.

Canon XTI, 18mm, f8, ISO800, 13 seconds exposure. For this pic I wanted the moving clouds so I set the aperture and shutter speed to values that would render the buildings in focus and the clouds as moving objects.

Paddle game

Paddle game, originally uploaded by lrargerich.

Canon S2IS. This is a player making a move during a Paddle Tennis Game. In order to capture the movement shutter speed was set to 2.5 seconds in shutter priority mode then aperture was adjusted to whatever provided the correct exposure. A longer shutter speed would probably make a big mess and shorter will just look out of focus without a sense of movement. I'm quite happy with the final result despite the location problems to take the pic.

Windup dragon toy

Windup dragon toy, originally uploaded by lrargerich.

Canon XTI 50mm ISO100 f/2 at 1/100 secs. The very wide aperture makes the background blurry (bokeh) while the object stays sharp, since the aperture is so big a flash was not needed even when this was taken indoors. Reflections on the toy chest are not very nice and the background should be improved for a more interesting effect.

Passing clouds

Passing clouds, originally uploaded by lrargerich.

Canon rebel XTI, f/22 at 1/30 seconds ISO 100 18mm.
The long shutter speed for f/22 without the tripod makes the pic unsharp but the slightly out of focus effect looks good here, it gives the clouds a slight sense of movement.
